Understanding Aromatherapy

In the 1920′s, a French cosmetic chemist named Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, was one day making fragrances in his laboratory, when he accidentally burned his arm. He then thrust his badly burnt arm into the nearest cold liquid, which turned out to be a tub of lavender oil. To his surprise, the pain was decreased dramatically and left no usual burn results, such as, redness, heat, inflammation, and blisters. He also noticed that the wound healed quickly and left none of the usual scars associated with burns. It was at that point that Gattefosse dedicated his life to researching the medicinal properties of what we now call nature’s essential oils. Incidentally, he was the first to coin the term aromatherapy.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are aromatic liquid substances extracted from specific species of trees, roots, leaves, fruits, grasses and flowers. These concentrated oils are far more valuable to humankind, than just pleasing aromas. The healing properties of the essential oils, have long been known in ancient times. From Egypt to India to China and used accordingly. Essential oils are absorbed through the skin and leaves no toxins like their medical drug counterparts; this is an effective way to use them. They are excreted from the body through urine, feces, perspiration, and exhalation.

Aromatherapy is a based on the use of pure essential and absolute oils. It is a holistic form of treatment which has been found to work on the physical, emotion and spiritual levels. There benefit can be felt psychologically and physically.

The oils used come from a variety of plants and are prepared from flowers, fruit, bark or roots. There is a couple of different methods of preparation used; steam distilled or cold-pressed.

Essential oils are usually used through massage, baths, compresses or inhalation. When they are used in massage and bathing, essential oils are absorbed though the skin into the bloodstream.

Essential oils that are inhaled are believed to offer benefits both psychologically and physically. The oil molecules stimulate scent receptors in the brain that trigger a response in the part of the brain that influences heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone balance.

Essential oils are often blended together for specific therapeutic action or just because they create a pleasing aroma. A blend of well selected oils can be of greater benefit than just one oil on its own.

Aromatherapy provides health and body care on a completely natural basis, and the subtle qualities of the oils lend themselves best to a gradual experience.

Only the highest quality of essential oils should be used in aromatherapy. The majority of essential oils produced in the world market are used in the food flavour and fragrance industry, so essential oils are often found on the market adulterated with similar essential oils, chemicals and synthetics.

Not all ready-made aromatherapy products labelled with the word ‘aromatherapy’ are pure and natural. Products that contain artificial ingredients do not provide true aromatherapy benefits. At worst, they provide no benefit

A look at some popular remedies.

Lavender
For temporary relief of headaches. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and massage pressure points, or add 6 drops to 10ml Vegetable Glycerine and add mixture to 1 litre of cold water for compress.
To help relieve nervous tension, mild anxiety, stress and insomnia. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and massage pressure points. Alternatively add 6 drops to 10ml Vegetable Glycerine and add mixture to bath; or add 6 drops to vapouriser.
Temporary relief of bronchial coughs and the relief of symptoms of catarrh, cold and flu. Add 6 drops to 10ml Vegetable Glycerine and add mixture to bath; or 6 drops to 1 litre steaming water, cover head with towel and inhale for 5 minutes. Asthmatics should avoid inhalation method. If cough persists, consult a health care professional.

Lemon
Temporary relief of bronchial cough and the relief of symptoms of cold and flu. Add 6 drops to 1 litre of steaming water, cover head with towel and inhale for 5 minutes. If cough persists, consult your health care professional.

Bergamot
Helps relieve mild anxiety, nervous tension and stress. Add 6 drops to 10ml Vegetable Glycerine, then add mixture to bath; or add 6 drops to vapouriser.

Lime
Temporary relief of bronchial cough and the relief of symptoms of colds and flu. Add 6 drops to 1 litre of steaming water, cover head with towel and inhale for five minutes. If cough persists, consult a health care professional.

Patchouli
To help relieve nervous tension and stress. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and massage pulse points. Alternatively add 6 drops to 10ml Vegetable Glycerine and add mixture to bath, or add 6 drops to vapouriser.

Peppermint
For temporary relief of catarrh, sinusitis, bronchial cough and the symptoms of cold and flu. Add 6 drops to 1 litre of steaming water, cover head with towel and inhale for 5 minutes. If cough persists, consult a health care professional.
Temporary relief of nausea. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and massage stomach in a clockwise direction. Alternatively add 6 drops to vapouriser. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.
Assist in the treatment or prevention of flatulence. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and massage stomach in a clockwise direction. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.
Relieve tired aching legs. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and massage legs and feet. Alternatively add 6 drops to 10m Vegetable Glycerine and add mixture to bath.

Sandalwood
To help relieve insomnia, nervous tension and stress. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and apply to pressure points. Alternatively add 6 drops to 10ml Vegetable Glycerine and add mixture to bath.
For the temporary relief of bronchial cough and sore throat, add 6 drops to 1 litre of steaming water, cover head with towel and inhale for 5 minutes. If cough persists, consult a health care professional.
Relief of symptoms of catarrh and laryngitis. Add 6 drops to 1 litre of steaming water, cover head with towel and inhale for 5 minutes.

Ylang Ylang
Temporary relief of nervous tension, stress, mild anxiety and insomnia. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and apply to pressure points. Alternatively, add 6 drops to 10ml Vegetable Glycerine and add to bath, or add 6 drops to vapouriser.
Assists in the treatment of flatulence. Add 6 drops to 10ml base oil or base cream and massage stomach in a clockwise direction. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.

“Aromatherapy” What is it?

Aromatherapy is the art and science of treating illnesses through essential oils and/or inhaling herbal mixtures. The sense of smell or olfactory senses are the quickest path to the brain. Once the scent molecules pass the brain, it enters the bloodstream through the lining in our lungs. Once the molecules enter the bloodstream they influence the nervous systems, adrenal glands, stomach, intestines, heart rate, circulatory, and immune systems. Now the scent molecules also stimulate or relax emotions, attitude, energy level, sex drive, concentration, memory and other brain activity. All of that from smelling scents that we already know.

Essential oils used in ancient Egyptian times had many purposes. Burial, spiritual, medical and perfume are just some of their uses. The word perfume comes from the Latin phrase through the smoke. Egyptians closed themselves in small rooms and burnt herbs and oils to cover their body odor. This is where incense came from. The Egyptians also noticed that the scented smoke had medicinal purposes also.
Rene- Maurice Gattefosse was a French chemist who coined the phrase Aromatherapy. It was actually an accident; He burned his hand then confused a bowl of water with a bowl of Lavender oil. Instead of a bad chemical reaction, he learned that the lavender oil healed the burn quicker and left less scarring. This launched his research in Essential oils and Aromatherapy.

The process of distillation is used to extract essential oils from grasses, leaves, trees, roots, and flowers. Some oils require a lot of raw material to make a small amount of oil, and then other oils are easier and less expensive to produce. Therefore, if oil has a higher price, and a few are quite expensive, then that means that particular oil is difficult to harvest and distill.

A headache is relieved with essential oils such as Eucalyptus, Lavender, feverfew, chamomile and marjoram. You could place a few drops of any of these oils in a diffuser or aroma lamp to keep your home or workplace headache free. Many homeopathic doctors prescribe the herb feverfew for migraines. In addition, valerian root, hops and lavender, which are all sedatives and muscle relaxers for those tense stressed out, neck muscles. Yarrow is an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and helps control high blood pressure, common cause of migraines and headaches

Who has kids? Most huh well you will need to pay attention here. Take out the aroma lamp and diffuser; put 6 drops of lavender, four of chamomile, and three of sandlewood or cedar wood. Turn it on and watch your house hold calm down almost immediately. You can also place chamomile or lavender in a small pillow and place it in your childrens bed. It is safe, pleasant; the child gets a better, more rejuvenating sleep. Jasmine also has a sedative quality as well as Patchouli.
Cinnamon bark is neat oil. It is warm, calming, spicy and comforting. There have been surveys conducted about the effect that the scent of cinnamon has on men, for example. Most men stated that the smell of cinnamon reminds them of grandmas kitchen, thus bringing on a feeling of love. However, it also helps women with cramps, regulates menstrual cycle, and even gives us a little boost in our love lives. Cinnamon also can be used for insect bites, treat infections and is used in cough elixirs. Be careful, cinnamon can irritate your skin if not diluted properly. There are some oils (like lavender, tea tree, and patchouli) can be applied directly to the skin with no dilution. To be safe I would dilute 2-4 drops of essential oil to 1 tsp. (5ml) of carrier oil. Carrier oils allow safe absorption into the skin and calms some of the more potent oils.

Aromatherapy is the idea that through the senses of touch and smell the body can achieve harmony between mind, body, and spirit. Balance is important today due to the Contamination of chemicals in our world as shown in the ozone alerts. Contemporary healers, therapists, and marketing gurus are grabbing hold of a phenomenon that insects and animals instinctively understand: the power of aroma.

Scientists pursue aromachology (the study of scent and its ability to change human behavior) for its role in everything from medicine to marketing, migraines to memory loss, and relaxation to revitalization.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to treat ailments. These conditions range from physical conditions to emotional problems. The essential oils of aromatherapy are extracted from aromatic plants and herbs–from the flower, bark, root, twig, seed, berry, rhizome, or leaves–generally through a process of steam distillation. These oils may be inhaled or massaged into the skin, after combining with a vegetable, nut or seed oil.

Massage with essential oils is most commonly used to alleviate skin ailments and muscle pain or tension. Lavender, orange, marjoram, and chamomile are particularly effective aromas in the use of massage.

Essential oils can be inhaled with the help of a vaporizer, an electric diffuser or an aroma lamp.

Our sense of smell is more complex than you might think. Your nose contain thousands of olfactory nerves. While your tongue has the ability to taste sweet, sour, salt, and bitter, it is your sense of smell that creates all the delightful flavors you experience. The olfactory bulb is part of your brain’s limbic system, which is not under conscious control. The limbic system controls digestion, libido, and emotions.

So, it’s not your imagination that scents evoke emotion. Aromas actually trigger the release of chemicals in the brain that create a feeling of well-being. Scientists say your body’s response to an aroma takes just four seconds.

Essential oils are available in natural and synthetic forms. Natural essential oils are not oils but non-oily, non-water-soluble substances, which dissolve in alcohol and combine with true oils. Pure, natural essential oils may be as much as 70 times more potent than the plant source itself.

Some synthetics are derived from natural products. The exact formulation of an essential oil is virtually impossible to reproduce in the laboratory. Even the smallest variation can produce significant changes in the oil’s effect. Some synthetic oils fall into the category of artificial fragrances, entirely made of petroleum products. These products generally do not produce the same therapeutic effects as essential oils.

Each essential oil is comprised of different hormones and vitamins, which combine to create different effects. Furthermore, the effects of each essential oil can vary depending on the botanical species and where it is grown. The effects of particular aromas also vary among cultures and individuals, so the results of aromatherapy are not universal. Still, aromatherapists have developed a roster of scents with relatively predictable effects:

With the stress involve in our way of living today, we get psychological and physiological consequences to our fragile health. We spend more of our hard earned money on over-the-counter medication or on prescriptions to help cure our little and bigger pains.

But what is Aromatherapy exactly?

Aromatherapy is the art and practice of using essential oils extracted from aromatic plants and herbs to restore or enhance health, beauty and well being. Aromatic molecules interact with the tops of your nasal cavity and gives the signal to the limbic system (the emotional switchboard of the brain). The limbic system is directly connected to the part that controls the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress level and hormone balance.

And it works. For example, we use Vicks for our colds, sinusitis and sore throat. It contains Eucalyptus. For me, it’s the only treatment that I find effective for Bronchitis, despite antibiotics treatment.

Let’s talk about Lavender. Lavender is multi use oil; it has strong psychological effects and physiological cures.

We find Lavender in the France. That flower has a fresh, sweet, floral scent. It has calming effect; smell it when you are stressed in the traffic, or at work, or right before an exam because Lavender has calming proprieties for panic attacks, stress, anxiety and even depression! It’s a gentle narcotic for mental and physical strain.

Some couples use Lavender base candles during giving birth to have the most calming experience, for the mother and for the new born. Other people burn a candle on a regular basis, after a surgery to help cope with the pain. You can also do it to calm the kids in the house! Or, for an anticipated quiet night at home with you lover…

Lavender is a good antibiotic for the skin. If your child has cuts and burnings, you can apply creams or lotion with enough concentration of the oil to prevent infection. It also reduces scaring.

Another good aromatic oil is Rosewood. It origins from a native tree in Brazil. It has a psychological effect of balancing, uplifting and enliving. You can use it before an interview, or a business meeting, or even before a hot date! If you are feeling down or lack of “joie-de-vivre” this aromatic essence can change your state of mind and make you look like an enjoyable person (save on alcohol or drugs here!).

Rosewood is also good to treat sensitive of aged skin, because it stimulates the regeneration of the skin.

What is Aromatherapy, and What Does it Mean to Me?

Aromatherapy is one of the practices used in the science of herbology, and it consists of using natural essential oils to heal. We introduce the oils into our body through the process of inhalation. Through inhalation, the oils enter into our lungs (from the bronchi into the alveoli and into our circulatory systems. From there, the herbs spread into the rest of our systems.

The way the oils enter our system is called aromatherapy. Many substances can enter our systems in this way, so this can be good or bad, depending on what the substance is. This is why we should be as careful with aromatherapy as with any introduction of substances or medicines.

But there are many herbs which have natural healing properties, and can also help heal our emotions as well as our bodies in a more natural and less invasive way than traditional medicines can.
As with anything, we need to take care when using herbs. Just because it is natural doesn’t make it safe! Remember that poisons also occur naturally and in abundance on this earth!
The difference between alternative therapies and medicine is only that medicines are heavily processed herbs and ingredients that also occur in nature.

What is Aromatherapy? It is the practice of using volatile plant oils (and essential oils) for physical and psychological well-being.

Before I get started take note that fragrance oils (fragrances) are not essential oils. This is because they contain unnatural chemicals and do not provide therapeutic benefits like essential oils.

Essential oils are the pure “essence” of a plant and when used properly will provide both psychological and physical benefits. There are many essential oils. Absolutes, CO2s and hydrosols are also commonly utilized in aromatherapy. CO2s and absolutes are often defined as part of the term “essential oil”.

Essential oils are very powerful and concentrated and should never be applied to the skin in their undiluted form. When applied to the skin essential oils are believed to be absorbed into the bloodstream. The components of the various oils are believed to aid in a variety of physical conditions including: health, hygiene, mental and beauty. To apply essential oils to the skin carrier oils (pure vegetable oils) are used to dilute the essential oils and carry them to the skin. Examples of carrier oils include (but are not limited to): apricot kernel oil, sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil.

Inhaling essential oils is believed to offer both physical and psychological benefits. The aroma of a natural essential oil stimulate’s the brain to trigger a reaction. The naturally occurring chemicals in essential oil are drawn into the lungs and can supply a physical benefit, as well. Be careful. It is easy to use essential oils in a dangerous way.

Oils can be blended together to provide a specific therapeutic action, or pleasing aroma. Synergistically blending oils in proper proportions is considered to have a further reaching effect than that of each oil working alone. This is what the art of essential oil blends is all about.
