Aromatherapy for the Holiday Spirit

The holiday season stirs up some of our most basic joys in life. The friendship and camaraderie we find at holiday parties and other social engagements is one of the highlights of the season. So is the fulfillment we gain through our special efforts to please our loved ones as we shop to find items that will make them smile. Moreover, since this is the season of giving, I encourage you to donate your time or money to those who lack of the warmth of a home, family and friends, or to children who won’t enjoy the delight of opening their gifts.

While the holidays are about giving, loving and joyous celebration, many consider this time of year to be stressful, lonely and expensive. If you’re feeling more like Scrooge than Santa, I offer the following aromatic blends to help you get into the holiday spirit, become more sociable, and open your heart to others who are unable to enjoy the holidays the way we do. Be ready to fully enjoy, laugh, socialize and share this holiday season by experimenting with these wonderful aromatic blends!

To create each of these blends, pour the essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and add organic vegetable oil to fill.

Remember how magical the holidays were as a child? This aromatic blend rekindles your childhood spirit, making you feel more daring, innocent and lighthearted!

-6 drops Orange
-3 drops Bergamot
-3 drops Basil

Massage your abdomen, solar plexus, neck and shoulders. Pour a few drops into the palm of your hands and inhale it deeply. Pour 20 drops of the blend into your warm bathwater and soak for at least 15 minutes.

The benefits Of An Aromatherapy Bath

Aromatherapy also advocates practices of taking bath using one of those exotic essential oils; for many of us, a hot and relaxing bath is both a way to calm down tired bodies and relieve stress. Further more, a few moments to think, ponder, contemplate and meditate can create wonders for the mind and body. A hot bath with one of your favorite oils adds a new experience to your life, which is otherwise straining and equally boring. Essential oils also called “oil of life”, is soothing and refreshing, when added to your bath tub. Thus, these oils compel us to think over using them at least once a day to feel invigorated. Using the bath as an innovative way of administering Aromatherapy is one of the best for numerous reasons.

Your entire dull skin gets a layer of pure essential oils. The misty vapors rising from the hot water enters your olfactory system and lungs. Your mind will be clear and calm, allowing you to concentrate on yourself and the essential oil treatment. It means essential oils bring a celestial experience to your bath room. The hot bath now makes you, in fact, makes you sweat and tired added with a treatment of oils.

Mandatory sleep or renewed vigor will soon follow such a refreshing treatment. Apart from these soothing effects, you can even adjust the level of essential oils to treat some of your skin conditions like acne and scabies. Another advantage of using aromatic oil is relieving your nervous conditions by making your mental constitution stronger and calmer. Some essential oils are known to be very romantic in nature; few drops your favorite oil will help you and your spouse to relax allowing passionate moments to overflow. It can also simply be used to aid in your enjoyment of your bath, to feel the balminess of flowing water.

Using essential oils in the bath is as simple as adding 10 drops just before you enter the tub. You can add, perhaps, lavender or Rose oils or intricately add concocted bath oil containing a number of oils. It is purely personal and you can choose your favorite oil. Floral oils like jasmine or rose oils, usually make perfect bath concoctions, but one can feel free to use a particular oil or blend for conditions they wish to help.

The good effects of aromatherapy bath directly seeps in to respiratory, skin and nervous system to reduce problems. It is also discovered that joint problems and muscle pain can also be greatly helped.

Though soaps and candles containing real, pure aromatic oils can be beneficial too, nothing compares the advantage of direct contact of essential oils with the bath water. You must note its high volatility and instability, so it is prudent, when using them in the bath and add those drops just before you are ready to enter. You must also trap all those steam vapors by making sure that you draw close the shower curtains. This single action will make sure you are reaping the benefits of the essential oils before they evaporate with the hot steam.

Any bath oils containing extracts of Vitamin E, when added to your favorite aromatic oil, can help the essential oil to linger on the surface of the water faster and usually can be placed under hot running water. If you want to create a lively bubble bath setting or special bath, add a bit of dried milk, a bit of good quality hand soap and fresh rose petals plus your oil. Women will find bathing in rosemary water to be particularly beneficial after a stressful day and/or PMS symptoms. Men can use a pungent orange or ylang-ylang, especially in the morning to get them started for a day of work.

Aromatherapy oils and their usage are gaining lots of popularity among beauty conscious people of the world; many personal care industries are using more essential oils in their bathing products, than ever before.

Aromatherapy for Emotional Security

Self-improvement is about finding balance and happiness in our daily lives. The most important area in which we can achieve balance is in our own emotional security. After all, we cannot find true balance in relationships, our work environment, and even spiritually until we achieve self-acceptance, self-control, understanding and compassion. And while many of us believe we have a balanced sense of self, our insecurities often creep silently into our life, leaving uncertainty and regret in its wake.

Emotional security is a subtle yet profound issue because without it you can develop unhealthy behaviors and attitudes, like codependency, control, neediness, demand, low self-esteem and more. It can also affect specific areas of our lives, including our relationship and career success.

Being emotionally secure leads to a healthy life in general because there are no unhealthy attachments, you are secure to be alone or in the company of others and you do not require validation from others. You are more willing to take risks because you have the confidence you need to achieve success in every aspect of your life.

There are ways to overcome insecurity. Engage your friends and loved ones in communication about your feelings and how they can help you to feel more at ease. Working with a coach or therapist may help discover the root of your insecurities. Numerous self-help books are available to help those who struggle with insecurities and low self-esteem. It is also important to indulge in nurturing therapies such as massage and aromatherapy. Not merely “guilty pleasures,” these kinds of therapies are an important way to demonstrate your self worth.

The following aromatherapy blends will support you during your drive to overcome your insecurities. These blends will help you gain a profound sense of inner peace and healthy detachment, allowing you to feel secure by eliminating any unhealthy needs you may have for validation and attention.

Prepare each of these blends by pouring the essential oils into a 10ml bottle, and then adding organic vegetable oil to fill. I recommend sweet almond, jojoba or safflower vegetable oils.

But what is Aromatherapy exactly?

Aromatherapy is the art and practice of using essential oils extracted from aromatic plants and herbs to restore or enhance health, beauty and well being. Aromatic molecules interact with the tops of your nasal cavity and gives the signal to the limbic system (the emotional switchboard of the brain). The limbic system is directly connected to the part that controls the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress level and hormone balance.

And it works. For example, we use Vicks for our colds, sinusitis and sore throat. It contains Eucalyptus. For me, it’s the only treatment that I find effective for Bronchitis, despite antibiotics treatment.

Let’s talk about Lavender. Lavender is multi use oil; it has strong psychological effects and physiological cures.

We find Lavender in the France. That flower has a fresh, sweet, floral scent. It has calming effect; smell it when you are stressed in the traffic, or at work, or right before an exam because Lavender has calming proprieties for panic attacks, stress, anxiety and even depression! It’s a gentle narcotic for mental and physical strain.

Some couples use Lavender base candles during giving birth to have the most calming experience, for the mother and for the new born. Other people burn a candle on a regular basis, after a surgery to help cope with the pain. You can also do it to calm the kids in the house! Or, for an anticipated quiet night at home with you lover…

Lavender is a good antibiotic for the skin. If your child has cuts and burnings, you can apply creams or lotion with enough concentration of the oil to prevent infection. It also reduces scaring.

Another good aromatic oil is Rosewood. It origins from a native tree in Brazil. It has a psychological effect of balancing, uplifting and enliving. You can use it before an interview, or a business meeting, or even before a hot date! If you are feeling down or lack of “joie-de-vivre” this aromatic essence can change your state of mind and make you look like an enjoyable person (save on alcohol or drugs here!).

Rosewood is also good to treat sensitive of aged skin, because it stimulates the regeneration of the skin.

Help Beat Winter Cold & Flu Bugs with Aromatherapy

‘Tis the season alright. Flu bug, cold bug, sniffles, sneezes, stuffy heads, runny noses. Chances are you’ve already been hit by at least one of these symptoms. If you’re like my family, you’ve been hit with them all.

Here’s a few essential oils that may help alleviate some of the symptoms and make everyone feel just a little bit better.

Clear the Air

An easy way to make the air in your winter enclosed home feel fresher and help beat off the bugs is to diffuse oils into the air. You can do with with a diffuser, lamp, ring or simply by warming some water on the stove and adding a few drops of oil to that. Just watch that you don’t let the pot go dry.

Some essential oils you can use: eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint, tea tree, ginger, orange, cinnamon, cypress, bergamot, frankincense, clary sage, pine, chamomile, lime, juniper, lavender.

Go Steam Your Head

When your head is stuffed and congested or you can’t stop coughing then steam your head. Steaming is an age old treatment to let warm, moist air into your head and lungs. Often used with herbs and essential oils for penetrating power. The cough from a cold is usually made worse by the dry winter air.

Pour boiling water into a metal or glass bowl, then add your essential oil. Drape a towel over your head and position your face 10-12″ above the bowl. Breath deeply.

Some essential oils you can use: cypress, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, lavender, rosemary, frankincense.

Bathing Beauties

Got that sore, achy feeling all over? Nothing feels better than a nice warm bath. Add some bath salts to help draw some of the metabolic toxins out with your sweat. Add some essential oils to ease chest and nasal congestion.

Some essential oils you can use: cypress, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, lavender, cedarwood, myrrh, rosemary.

You CAN Sleep with a Cold

Sleeping when you can’t breathe means a long, tiring and restless night for you. Things you can do to help ease it a bit is to make sure you have a humidifier or vapourizer going in the room. The humid air helps keep your air passages moist.

Next add the same penetrating oils from the “Clear the Air” list. Whatever worked best for you in that list, use it here.

Make sure your vapourizer has the proper insert for adding essential oils. If it doesn’t, a small ceramic dish beside the steam outlet (not over) will work nicely too. Close enough that the dish warms up from the steam, but does not block the steam’s path. A couple of drops of the oil placed on a cloth close to your pillow will give an extra boost until the scented steam takes effect.

Why so many suggested oils?

Simply because some oils work better on one person than another. Some oils are easier to find than others and some people may have known reactions to certain oils. You need to play with the different oils and see which ones are most effective on you.

There are many more oils that can be used for these conditions. Pick up any aromatherapy book and you’ll likely find more oils suggested. However some require advanced knowledge to utilize them safely, some aren’t quite as effective as the ones listed here and some are wonderful but are just too costly for all but the most dedicated users.

The best thing you can do is try a few of the more common oils out and see how they affect you. As always, pick up some reputable books on aromatherapy and find out more about the oils you’ve chosen. You’re on your way to a healthier, smelling-good kind of home.
