What is Aromatherapy, and What Does it Mean to Me?

  • Posted on November 23, 2006 at 12:49 pm

Aromatherapy is one of the practices used in the science of herbology, and it consists of using natural essential oils to heal. We introduce the oils into our body through the process of inhalation. Through inhalation, the oils enter into our lungs (from the bronchi into the alveoli and into our circulatory systems. From there, the herbs spread into the rest of our systems.

The way the oils enter our system is called aromatherapy. Many substances can enter our systems in this way, so this can be good or bad, depending on what the substance is. This is why we should be as careful with aromatherapy as with any introduction of substances or medicines.

But there are many herbs which have natural healing properties, and can also help heal our emotions as well as our bodies in a more natural and less invasive way than traditional medicines can.
As with anything, we need to take care when using herbs. Just because it is natural doesn’t make it safe! Remember that poisons also occur naturally and in abundance on this earth!
The difference between alternative therapies and medicine is only that medicines are heavily processed herbs and ingredients that also occur in nature.
Herbs can be the very same plants that medicine uses, only not heavily processed, and sometimes in lower concentrations without all the additional chemicals added.

Our sense of smell is one of our strongest of our senses, That is why a smell can trigger
an earlier experience so vividly. This is why aromatherapy is such a powerful tool.

We can use this knowledge to:
1. heal a sickness
2. prevent a sickness
3. enhance quality of life
4. esthetically, such as in using perfume
5. enhance our state psychologically

There are many ways to use these essential oils. You can use them in your personal body care products, such as shampoos, skin cremes, or soaps and lotions. You can use them in candles or in diffusers and vessels, in aromatherapy
The use of essential oils and herbs is mainly about a lifestyle choice. It involves a much healthier way of living, It is a way to delight your senses, while enhancing your immune system. A way to help in yourself and your families well being, increasing your energy, regaining your sanity, and enjoying the rest of our lives.

Aromatherapy’s Mind-Smell Connection

  • Posted on November 11, 2006 at 12:49 pm

Why is smell so strongly linked to memory and emotion?

It is not fully understood, but this is no surprise as the complexities of brain activity are still far from being unravelled and understood. The brain holds far more secrets than we have discovered. What is known is that the sense of smell is registered in a part of the brain which was already developed in our earliest ancestors.

The limbic area of the brain was well developed before man had the power of speech or was able to make tools. The limbic area is concerned with all those activities vital to survival in a sometimes hostile world: sleep, hunger, thirst, memory, sexual response and, or course, smell are all affected by the limbic system.

As modern man developed the ‘higher’ senses and the brain became larger to accommodate development of speech, intellect and creativity, the ancient knowledge became blunted or buried deep in the unconscious and the limbic area of the brain lost some of its importance. But that ancient knowledge is still there and needs only to be re-awakened.

Essential oils have the power to re-awaken and stimulate the limbic system and the aromas can be used to excellent effect by the aromatherapist.

They also have the power to balance the two hemispheres of the brain. It is known that the left hemisphere of the brain is concerned with logic and intellect, whilst the right is concerned with intuition.

When both hemispheres are in harmony and balanced, we experience feelings of calm and well-being. As we inhale the balancing essential oils, the two hemispheres of the brain come into closer symmetry, whilst the stimulating essential oils make us feel mentally alert and the sedating oils promote deeper feeling of relaxation. The relationship between the brain, the mind and the body is of vital importance in aromatherapy.

When we send pleasing, relaxing messages to the brain during aromatherapy massage, the hypothalamus receives impulses signalling safety and harmony and, in its turn, the body receives the signal that all is well and that the body and mind are in balance.

The effects of essential oils and massage on the various activities of the nervous system form a major part of aromatherapy. We use analgesic oils to relieve pain by damping down the activity of the pain-transmitting nerve endings.

Aromatherapy: New Age Fad Or Age-Old Remedy?

  • Posted on November 5, 2006 at 12:49 pm

Aromatherapy refers to the use of essential oils that have been extracted from plants, shrubs and trees. These essential oils can be used for a wide variety of purposes. They can be used to treat medical conditions or alleviate psychological ailments. Aromatherapy oils are used as cosmetics. Finally, aromatherapy can be used simply for pleasure, to help improve your mood or to reduce your stress. The essential oils of aromatherapy have the power to affect both your physical and mental state.

Aromatherapy has recently been labeled a New Age fad, but the practice of aromatherapy has a long history. The often negative use of the New Age label causes an unfortunate prejudice against a practice that has many potential benefits.

The effective use of aromatherapy requires considerable knowledge and expertise. The essential oils of aromatherapy can be applied in a wide variety of situations. They have been proven effective in treating both serious and minor ailments. Even when aromatherapy cannot provide a cure, it can improve an individual’s mood.

We often practice aromatherapy on an everyday basis without realizing it. When we choose aromas, bath oils, and air fresheners, we usually choose based on what we like, or on how the fragrance makes us feel. The refreshing scent of a pine forest, the pleasurable aromas of herbs, or the many other daily experiences we have with the scents of plant-derived substances indicate that we are actually practicing and experiencing aromatherapy in many ways.

The practice of aromatherapy for treating ailments actually predates chemical-based medicine. The essential oils of aromatherapy have been used for hundreds of years in herbal medicine, disease prevention, and in religious and public ceremonies.

The proven benefits of plant-based therapies are being overlooked in favor of artificial substitutes. It’s easy to forget that many commonly used pharmaceuticals were originally derived from plants. Many also doubt that something applied externally could possibly have an internal effect. But the answer to many of today’s diseases has been with us from the beginning, stored in the plant life around us. Aromatherapy unlocks the power of these essential oils and applies it for our benefit.
